Much of my work is commission based, although every project is different the process typically follows several distinct stages
Informal discussion of project ideas, concept and budget which can be in person, via email or over the phone. Initial consultations are free of charge and without obligation. On agreement to proceed a small fee will be agreed to further develop the project.
Research and development including considerations of site, materials and themes. Initial ideas are developed and refined into a practical concept including drawings and models as necessary. Agreement of a budget and timescale for the project.
Detailed design, fabrication, finishing and installation. Typically contracts are based on staged payments with the opportunity to approve the work at each stage and final payment made after installation.
Most of my work is made by hand and pieces almost always evolve during the making process so I don't normally differentiate between open and limited editions except for occasional cases where a piece is wholly cast from a master or reproduced by some other mechanical process. Having said that I am happy to negotiate limited edition runs of commissioned pieces subject to agreement of the precise scope of the work.
Most of my work comes with a 5 year warrantee, covering defects in materials and workmanship, obvious exceptions being work which is essentially ephemeral or temporary in nature.
But my permeant works are designed to be just that and with reasonable maintenance I hope will outlive me and I am happy to provide lifetime support for all or my work in terms of free of charge maintenance advice and repair at refurbishment at a reasonable cost.
