Into the woods
I worked as production designer for SMTC's production of Into the Woods by Sondheim and Lapine. Performed in Stratford on Avon in May 2017. This production sets various traditional fairly tales in a modern refugee camp.
The script weaves together a variety of well known fairy stories, such as Raupunzel, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Jack and the beanstalk with a supporting cast of witches Princes and giants as well as some original characters including Milky White ( a Cow) and the Baker and his Wife who ground the story as ordinary peopel who are carried along by the events around them.
This was my first venture into theater design and posed a lot of challenges technically in terms of producing a full range of set pieces, props and physical effects as well as collaborating with various technical specialists on the art concept of costume, makeup and lighting design and the overall look of the production. Equally the combination of the gritty contemporary setting and the fantasy inherent in the original stories as well as balancing the sometimes dark themes with comic moments.
