Steel Sundial
A contemporary take on a traditional sundial design. The key components are the equatorial ring and the 'gnomon' rod which passes through the ring's centre. The gnomon and ring are aligned with the equator and the earth's polar axis respectively. The time is indicated by the shadow cast by the gnomon onto the inside of the equator ring.
This piece is fabricated from hand cut steel profiles which are welded together.
This version is finished with a black oxide patina and sealed with a wax based polish. Similar designs are also available to special order in a variety of other finishes and materials including red oxide, stainless steel, brass, copper and nickel plated. (Please email for prices).
Larger and smaller sizes can also be made to order.
Each sundial is made to suit a specific location according to its latitude and can be scaled to suit particular settings such as a garden or public space. The example shown here is approximately 60cm hight (not including plinth).
