Newdale Primary School

A project carried out in collaboration with a Shropshire school over the course of the school year. This involved working closely with staff and pupils through a series of workshops, discussions and visits.

The brief was to produce a series of pieces of contemporary metal wall art reflecting the theme of lizards and geckos, running in parallel with a cross-curricular project throughout the school year.

The project culminated with the installation of a series of sculptural lizards, fabricated in steel and incorporating design elements produced by the pupils themselves.

The overall themes combine modern fabrication techniques with images drawn from traditional art from around the world.

Iron oxides have been uses as pigments since the cave paintings of prehistoric man and the colours and textures of these sculptures illustrate versatility of iron and steel as artistic materials, exhibiting a natural palette which is both vibrant and able to harmonise equally with man-made and natural environments. The natural tones respond to changes of light and season as well as being inherently durable.
